Michael Larranaga’s NPS-CHDS Team Advances to Phase II of the USCG #ReadyforRescue Challenge

Michael Larranaga’s NPS-CHDS team was selected as an honorable mention award winner in the USCG #ReadyforRescue Challenge Phase I. The U.S. Coast Guard’s challenge sought to identify bold visions of boater safety solutions that have the potential to improve the chances of a successful rescue. Submissions harnessed technologies such as smart watches, LED lights, thermal heating devices, and fluorescent gels, as well as re-designed consumer products such as phone cases.

A 32-person judging panel, with expertise in design, search and rescue, marine safety, boating industry manufacturing, and recreational boating, evaluated the submissions and recommended five monetary prize winners and 16 honorable mention award winners.

Michael Larranaga’s team (Merideth Bastiani, Steven M. Polunsky, Angi English, Andre Billeaudeaux, Greg Bernard, William Pilkington) proposed the ‘FindMe System’, which is a life saving personal flotation device that allows for quick location when someone falls in the water.

The team will now advance to Phase II of the Ready for Rescue Challenge.
