REM Work Featured in New NFPA Research Foundation Report

A new report published by the NFPA Fire Protection Research Foundation features REM’s work on carbon monoxide (CO) incidents in the U.S. lodging industry. The NFPA report, “Carbon Monoxide Incidents: A Review of the Data Landscape” reviews the current sources of CO incident data, how the data is compiled, and discusses what the data represents. Additionally, this report identifies, summarizes, and analyzes case studies of non-fire carbon monoxide incidents specific to commercial-type occupancies to provide a greater understanding to the NFPA Safety to Life Technical Committee who is responsible for writing the NFPA 101, Life Safety Code® and the NFPA Building Code Technical Committee who is responsible for writing the NFPA 5000, Building Construction and Safety Code®. The full NFPA report can be downloaded here.

REM’s work featured in the NFPA report has been previously published in the Journal of Preventative Medicine Reports. The paper, Analyzing the National Fire Incident Reporting System to Identify Carbon Monoxide Incidents in the U.S. Lodging Industry is a continuation of previous efforts to document CO incidents at U.S. hotels and motels. In the paper, REM uses the NFIRS database to identify 3,405 CO incidents in the U.S. lodging industry; previous efforts had only identified 367 incidents through news reports. As a result, REM’s research shows the lodging industry CO incidents occur at far greater rates than previously realized, indicating a larger public health risk associated with lodging industry CO exposure. The incidents identified through REM’s research have been presented in an interactive map detailing the locations and details of what occurred.
